This past weekend was the Avow Hospice Regatta in cooperation with the gorgeous Marco Island Yacht Club. I had 4 ladies help me SAIL Windy City down from Cape Coral. This trip usually takes about 8 hours, but since the winds were PERFECT 12-14K with overcast skies, we SCREAMED down the coast and arrived an hour early. Best part? Other than the quiet of NO MOTOR - was the cost! Wind is FREE! Windy City raised almost $600 for hospice; coming in 2nd of the 23 boats entered.
Saturday brought similar winds. We did 4 races; 3 of which we had a FABULOUS start, and the 4th race, one of my competitors caught the starting line inflatable buoy & dragged it 10'! We were caught in a traffic jam, but, luckily, no one got hit. My crew performed fabulously; the boat ROCKED, and we ended up with 1,2,2,2. The winning boat is a Swan 53' named Dragonfly. They are VERY hard to beat; as the boat is super fast & the skipper has many years of experience.
Sunday was a crazy maze of a race; and we ended up in 2nd again. Avow Hospice knows how to throw a party! Snacks at the Friday night skipper's meeting, bar BQ Saturday night, and outstanding trophies at the Sunday Awards Dinner. Lots of craziness, laughs, and good stories.
Monday brought light winds, so we had to turn on the motor and used "otto", our auto pilot to get us home. Another wonderful weekend in SW Florida. Always sleep like a baby aboard, too. That gentle rocking motion gets you!
